Frequently Asked Questions

I hope the FAQ answers any questions you have about starting therapy or about how I work. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any remaining questions.

1. What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy involves speaking with, and making sense of your thoughts, feelings and emotions with a trained psychotherapist, in a non-judgemental, neutral, confidential space. Psychotherapists utilise their deep understanding of psychological theories, advanced listening and reflection skills, as well as the developing client/therapist relationship to explore, and make sense of your experiences and the issues you are grappling with. This could be addressing and working through past trauma or adverse childhood experiences, getting to the root of dysfunctional relationship patterns or unhelpful thinking patterns, grieving a loss or life transition, or a multitude of other experiences and difficulties.

2. How can Psychotherapy help?

Psychotherapy can be powerful and life-changing with the right therapist. Having a confidential space, and a consistent, protected time, to speak with a trained professional and reflect on difficulties can bring much needed relief. It can help to shine a light on and give a new perspective and deeper understanding of yourself and the issue(s) you are grappling with. Through psychotherapy you can find better ways to cope with feelings and fears, work through difficult past experiences, learn to communicate better, and improve the relationship with yourself and others.

At the heart of psychotherapy is the relationship you form with the therapist. Research shows that, over time, with the right conditions – non-judgement, safety, and trust – new ways of relating can be developed which can be taken forward into other relationships in your life.

3. Are my problems big enough?

There is no scale of suffering. Clients come to see me from all walks of life and for a very wide variety of difficulties. Whether diagnosed with a mental health condition, feeling lost, stuck, sad or lonely, or carrying shame and regret; psychotherapy can help. Each client is unique. I tailor how I work to each individual client through a dynamic, collaborative process, at your pace.

4. How many sessions will I need?

This really depends on the client and the nature of the issues being worked on. We can discuss early on in our sessions and review as we proceed. I offer short and long-term, fixed or open-ended sessions based on your needs.

5. How long do sessions last?

Each weekly session lasts for 50 minutes and takes place at the same time each week. We will agree a mutually convenient time to meet which will be reserved for you.

6. Do you charge for missed sessions?

I operate a 48-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel after this time, or miss a session, full payment is expected.

7. Are you qualified as a Psychotherapist?

Yes, I am a qualified Psychotherapist. I hold a Masters of Arts degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as an Advanced Diploma, and a Diploma in Counselling. I earned my UKCP Accreditation with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and I am a full clinical member.

I am also registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). In line with my ethical duties, and to further develop professionally, I undertake regular training courses to remain up to date with the latest developments and thinking in the sector.
